The flag industry has always been relationship-driven.
For many dealers, some of their best customers are people they have worked with for years. They know who to call when they need a replacement flag, a custom banner, a new flagpole, or help figuring out an unusual project.
But the way customers shop is changing.
Today, it takes only a few seconds to search online, compare multiple companies, request a quote, or place an order with a business they have never worked with before.
That does not mean relationships matter less.
It means staying connected matters more.
Your existing customers already know your business. They have already purchased from you. Hopefully, they already trust you.
The question is: when was the last time they heard from you?
Your Existing Customers Are One of Your Biggest Assets
It is easy to focus most of your marketing energy on finding new customers, but keeping the customers you already have can be just as important.
Harvard Business Review has reported that acquiring a new customer can cost anywhere from five to 25 times more than retaining an existing one.
For a flag dealer, an existing customer may also come with something especially valuable: history.
You may already know:
What they purchased
When they purchased it
What size flags they use
Whether they hold annual events
When their busiest seasons occur
Which custom projects they have ordered before
When their flags or hardware may need to be replaced
That information gives you a head start.
Instead of treating every sale as a completed transaction, think of it as the beginning of the next conversation.
Give Customers a Reason to Hear From You
Proactive outreach does not mean filling someone’s inbox with constant sales pitches.
The most effective communication is usually timely and useful.
That might look like:
“Memorial Day is coming up. Do you need to replenish your American flag inventory?”
“Spring sports are around the corner. Are you planning any team flags or banners this year?”
“You ordered these for your event last March. Would you like us to quote them again?”
Sharing flag care or replacement reminders
Introducing a new product or capability
Sending inspiration from a recent custom project
Sharing relevant flag etiquette, legislation, or industry information
The goal is not simply to remind customers that you exist.
It is to give them a reason to think of you before they start looking elsewhere.
Build Follow-Up Into Your Routine
Being proactive does not require a large marketing department or an expensive system.
It just requires a system.
For some dealers, that may be a CRM. For others, it may be a spreadsheet, email platform, or even recurring reminders on a calendar.
Start with a few simple touchpoints:
A monthly or quarterly email
Seasonal customer outreach
Annual reorder reminders
Follow-up after large or custom projects
Scheduled check-ins with major accounts
Reminders tied to recurring customer events
Recent small-business customer-retention guidance from HubSpot specifically recommends proactive outreach and scheduled check-ins rather than waiting until a customer has already disengaged.
SCORE makes a similar point: small businesses do not need enterprise-level software or a large marketing team to build customer loyalty. What matters more is having a clear, consistent system that fits the business, its customers, and its capacity.
Consistency matters more than complexity.
Don’t Let Online Competitors Own the Conversation
Online competition is not going away. In fact, it’s just getting stronger, bolder, and harder to compete with.
Customers are constantly being exposed to businesses through search results, social media, digital ads, emails, and online marketplaces.
Those businesses are easy to find, available around the clock, and often very good at staying visible.
Independent dealers have an advantage many of those competitors do not: a real relationship with the customer.
You may know the customer’s property, their organization, their previous projects, or even the person placing the order.
That is difficult for an anonymous online seller to replicate.
But relationships are an advantage only if you keep nurturing them.
If a customer has not heard from you in a year and suddenly needs a flag, there is no guarantee they will remember to call before opening Google. Especially if they are feeling rushed to complete the order.
A simple check-in early on can help keep your business top of mind.
Start With the Customers You Already Have
If proactive outreach feels like one more thing to add to an already long list, start small.
Pull your customer list and choose 20 or 25 past customers.
For each one, ask:
What did they buy?
When did they buy it?
Is there a natural replacement or reorder cycle?
Do they have an annual event coming up?
Is there another product or service that could genuinely help them?
When was the last time we contacted them?
Then reach out.
You do not need a complicated campaign or a perfectly written sales email. Sometimes a simple, personal message asking what they have coming up is enough to restart the conversation.
The phone ringing is great.
But a strong business cannot rely entirely on waiting for it to happen.
Stay visible. Stay useful. Stay connected to the customers who already know your name.
And when those customers need a custom flag, banner, or project that requires a little extra problem-solving, Atlas is here to help you figure out how to price it, produce it, and deliver it successfully.
